Welcoming a newborn into the world is a beautiful and life-changing experience. Capturing those early days through photography allows you to preserve precious memories—but many parents worry about whether their baby will cooperate during the session. The truth is, newborn fussiness is completely normal!
As a lifestyle newborn photographer, I take a relaxed, baby-led approach. I sometimes gently pose newborns for classic, timeless images, but much of the session is go-with-the-flow, capturing real, beautiful moments as they naturally unfold. Whether your baby is peacefully sleeping, stretching, or needing extra snuggles, here are some simple ways to keep them calm and comfortable during their photoshoot.
1. Feed Your Baby Before the Session
A full belly makes for a happy, sleepy newborn. I always recommend feeding your baby right before I arrive so they’re relaxed and content. But if they need an extra feeding break during the session, that’s completely okay! I encourage parents to follow their baby’s cues rather than a strict schedule—those little moments of feeding and comforting often make for some of the most heartwarming photos.

2. Keep the Room Warm and Cozy
Newborns love warmth—it reminds them of the womb. If your home feels a little warmer than usual, that’s perfect! I suggest setting the room temperature around 75-78°F (24-26°C) or using a space heater if needed. A cozy baby is a happy baby, especially if they’ll be swaddled or wearing just a diaper for some photos.
any time to make more changes.
3. Use White Noise or Gentle Sounds
White noise mimics the soothing environment of the womb and helps calm babies during their session. If you already use a sound machine for naps, keep it on during the photoshoot. If not, a simple fan or a white noise app can work just as well. Soft lullabies or gentle shushing can also help settle a fussy baby.
4. Swaddle for Comfort
Many newborns feel secure when swaddled—it prevents sudden movements that might startle them. If your baby enjoys being wrapped up, I encourage starting with a snug, breathable swaddle for the session. However, I also love capturing unwrapped, natural baby movements, so we can adjust as needed based on their comfort.

5. Embrace Natural Moments (and a Little Posing, Too!)
My lifestyle newborn sessions focus on capturing the natural love and connection between you and your baby. While I sometimes gently pose newborns for a few timeless shots, most of the session is about going with the flow. If your baby is fussy, that’s totally fine! Holding, rocking, or nursing your baby during the session often leads to the most genuine, heartfelt images. Some of the sweetest shots come from parents simply comforting their little one in their arms.
6. Be Patient and Enjoy the Moment
Babies are unpredictable, and that’s okay! If your little one needs a break for feeding, a diaper change, or extra snuggles, we’ll take our time. The most important thing is for you to relax and enjoy the experience—your baby will pick up on your energy. No matter what, we will capture beautiful memories of this fleeting stage in your family’s life.
Final Thoughts
Lifestyle newborn sessions aren’t about perfect poses or strict timelines—they’re about preserving the love, connection, and everyday beauty of this special time. Fussiness, feedings, and snuggles are all part of the process, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
